Coating characterization of
diamond-like coatings (DLC, ta-C) by ANTACON and Anton Paar

Abstract: By combining the laser deposition process (pulsed laser deposition) with the laser tempering process, ANTACON GmbH from Mittweida has succeeded in producing extremely hard DLC coatings with low internal stresses. The mechanical properties of these coatings can be analyzed quantitatively using Anton Paar’s nano hardness test. Indentation hardnesses of up to HIT = 61GPa were measured.

HIGH LEVEL OF TRAFFIC PROTECTION! – Stress-free
DLC 2.0 coatings at a glance

ANTACON GmbH offers extremely hard carbon-based wear protection coatings with unprecedented properties. The innovation is based on a patented technology that makes it possible to produce super-hard and stress-free DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coatings. This means that the corresponding layers can be produced not only with maximum hardness, but also in any thickness. Their similarity to diamond is particularly evident in their resistance to various wear mechanisms.

HIGH LEVEL OF TRAFFIC PROTECTION! – Stress-free
DLC 2.0 coatings at a glance

In many branches of industry, highly wear-resistant coatings are required to protect tools and components from wear and thus significantly increase service life. The rule is often: “The harder the better!”. With regard to ta-C coatings, it should be clarified that these belong to the group of DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coatings and DLC according to the German standard. VDI Guideline 2840 is a collective term for a whole group of carbon coatings that are produced using different processes, have different compositions and properties and only have a certain amount of diamond bonding. Accordingly, DLC coatings can only be compared with each other by taking into account the representative-specific properties, in particular the diamond bonding content. The previous obstacle to the application of so-called ta-C coatings was the fact that these coatings develop very high internal stresses (of up to 12 GPa) as a result of the special deposition conditions during production. Laser pulse deposition technology makes it possible for the first time to produce stable ta-C coatings with maximum hardness, stress-free and thus in any thickness. These coatings therefore have an absolutely unique selling point, which is of great industrial interest, as such coatings offer a significant advantage, particularly in wear protection applications.
